Barnaby Jones was a former private eye who temporarily came out of retirement to track down the killer of his son Hal, who had taken over the family business. After bringing Hal's murderer to justice (with the assistance of fellow CBS gumshoe Frank Cannon), Jones decided retirement just wasn't his bag after all, and rehung his shingle with the assistance of daughter-in-law Betty, who ran the office and Barnaby's personal crime laboratory, and (later) young distant cousin Jedidiah, who did the cases' legwork.

Barnaby Jones and Frank Cannon continue to work together to unravel a deadly conspiracy to cover-up corporate wrong doing and several related murders. Meanwhile, Betty goes undercover to help them crack the case despite the dangers.

Barnaby's cousin, a cop from Chicago comes and calls him, he tells Barnaby he has a lead on the man who killed his partner, whom he's been looking for. But after talking to him, some men grab him and kill him. Barnaby's informed of his death. He then calls his son, J.R. who comes and demands to know what is being done to find who killed his father. Barnaby thinks he has a lead but proceed cautiously. But J.R. is impatient and goes on his own.

Barnaby uncovers a trail of lies, deceit, and murder as he investigates the death of a real estate investor on the behalf of his grieving daughter - who is convinced it was not accidental.

Barnaby grudgingly begins to suspect that an arson investigator that he has trusted for years is involved in setting fires and then ruling them as accidental in order to get a cut of the insurance money.
